The Ship had some modern conveniences: a satellite phone for emergencies, and a flush toilet in the lower deck for use while sailing in the Great Barrier Reef. The show originally aired on the BBC from 20 August to 24 September 2002. The trip was filmed a year earlier and the episode where the crew were informed of the 9/11 attacks was shown on 10 September 2002.

Starting with Season 2, the Bawcoms are replaced by the team of Christopher Hanna and Robbie Welsh. Season 3 premiered on December 12, 2012 . In a typical episode, the carriers place bids on two jobs listed on uShip, in a reverse auction format. Each client has the option of awarding the job either to the lowest bidder, or to a higher bidder based on feedback from previous clients. Ties are broken in favor of the carrier with the higher average feedback rating. Winners load their cargo and attempt to deliver it intact by the client's deadline. Feedback ratings from clients are displayed as the loads are delivered. At the end of the episode, each carrier's net profit or loss is tallied on-screen, with the expenses subtracted from the bid amount to determine the overall profit or loss. At times, a carrier will arrange to haul one or more additional loads on the same trip, with the extra money figured into his/her tally.

Shipwrecked: Battle of the Islands 2009 is a United Kingdom reality television series, part of the Shipwrecked strand which has aired on Channel 4's youth programming label T4 in different formats since 2000. The 2009 series is the seventh series of Shipwrecked overall, and the fourth and final to adopt the "Battle of the Islands" format. The Series was recommissioned by Channel 4 on Thursday 26 June 2008. Castaway auditions took place during the summer and filming for the series commenced in September 2008 and finished in early November 2008. It began airing on Sunday 1 February 2009 at 12:30pm on Channel 4. This is the final series of Shipwrecked: Battle of the Islands, and the penultimate series overall.
